Local choreographer, Heather Walrond, 24 has been awarded more than £38,000 to create her first major touring dance show, as well as host Fijian dancers at her International Dance Residency in Plymouth.

The grant, awarded by Arts Council England, will support the costs of developing and performing an exciting new contemporary dance show ‘THE RISING’, set to tour the UK Autumn/Spring 16/17.

Heather said ‘I feel overwhelmed by the incredible support from all over the South West for this project, a massive thank you to Arts Council England, Barbican Theatre, Plymouth University, Devon Educational Trust, Gane Trust, Plymouth Culture, Plymouth Dance and Dance in Devon.

For the touring work, Heather will be collaborating with six professional dancers, two multi award-winning musicians, an extensive production team, Jason Yeoman Film & Photography plus an acclaimed photographer travelling all the way from Australia.

Phil Gibby, Area Director, South West, Arts Council England, said: ‘It’s really important that artists have the opportunity to apply for financial support at key stages of their career and Grants for the Arts is a great way to do that. We are pleased to be supporting Heather at this early stage of her development, helping her to build partnerships with international companies and theatre venues across the region, and I cant wait to see what happens with her future work and career.’

The funding also supports twelve Fijian dancers’ visit to Plymouth, allowing them to share their traditional Fijian dance and culture, as well as take part in dance workshops with HeatherWalrondCompany and local Taiko Drummers.
